Argumentative

Writing

Unit

Allowing students to explore argumentative writing in alignment with their own passions and current events.

The Spark

As I started to take over classes during my student teaching semester at Lively Middle School, the ELA department knew it was going to transition into argumentative writing, but not quite sure the direction the unit should go.

Drawing inspiration from target acquisition planning and project based instruction, I began to sketch out a project on a sticky note, thinking centrally about what students needed to understand in order to form clear arguments. Knowing we would introduce things such as thesis, counter-arguments, proper research, citations, and that of the like, I started to talk with my CT about my vision of this project. After talking with some students about the idea and discussing it more, finally the unit was ready to be planned out.

About The Unit

The Argumentative Writing Unit Project is a 5-6 week unit that revolves around first introducing students to the world of proper argumentation with a brainstorming RAGE WRITING activity, in which they can propose different things in the world they are mad or frustrated about. This exercise directly allows students to have their voice heard and build strong interest in the unit.

Afterwards, the students are taught in a mini-lesson and conferring model of writing, building strong argumentative writing pieces tailored to their own passions. After revising, editing, peer-conferencing, and publishing their writing, they then create a large project presentation to be given during a large gallery walk, attended by peers, teachers, and administrators.
